Stump grinding in New Jersey
Stump grinding chews what is left of a cut-down tree into wood chips, several inches below ground level. It is a separate job from removal and is usually priced separately, so ask for it when you ask for a removal quote.
When you need this
- A tree was cut down and the stump is in the lawn, in the mower's path or in a spot you want to use.
- You are about to plant, lay sod, pave or build where the stump is.
- The stump keeps sprouting new shoots, or people trip on it.
What happens
- The company checks the stump and the yard for access. A grinder is a machine, so a narrow gate or steep slope matters.
- Buried utility lines get marked before any digging or grinding. Ask whether the company calls 811 or expects you to.
- The operator sweeps a spinning cutting wheel across the stump, cutting down below the surface. Surface roots that stick out can be ground too, if you ask.
- You are left with a mound of wood chips in the hole. Ask beforehand whether they stay, get hauled, or get used to fill and level the spot.
What affects the quote
- Stump diameter and how far the roots flare out above the ground.
- Access. A narrow gate or a steep yard limits which machine fits.
- How deep you need it ground, for example for a new tree compared with grass seed.
- Whether the chips stay or go, and whether the hole is filled and leveled.
- Several stumps in one visit may cost less each than separate trips. Ask.
We set no prices. For published national cost ranges and where they come from, see the pricing guide. A real price needs someone to look at the job.
Questions to ask the company
- How deep will you grind, and how far out along the roots?
- Will the chips be left, hauled away, or used to fill the hole?
- Who calls 811 to have buried lines marked?
- Is filling and leveling the spot in the price?
We are a referral site, not the tree company, so we cannot answer these for the company that calls you. Ask them.
Permits
Grinding a stump is different from taking a tree down. If a permit or replacement tree was part of removing this tree, keep that paperwork in mind. We have not confirmed whether any town regulates grinding on its own, so check the town page for your town and ask.
